Yes, I Put On Makeup to Come to Your Birth! Authored by Sara Skiles

“You're going to a birth, not to a party.

Yes, I've been scoffed at!

Before I leave to go to a birth, I take a few minutes to put on some makeup. Brows, a little waterproof mascara...lipstick...even (especially) in the middle of the night.

Why do I bother? I'm probably going to get sweaty. I might get bodily fluids on me.

And I'll probably almost definitely cry a little bit.

But I am a professional woman showing up for work, and I want to look the part!

My clients are paying for a premium service, and they deserve to have their doula show up looking fresh, bringing positive energy, ready to get in there and work hard and give her absolute best.

You've probably never seen me when I first wake up, but folks, it's not good!

I never want my wonderful clients to take a look at me and feel guilty for waking me up. The focus needs to be on their comfort, not mine. It's not about me or my vanity.

I want my clients to see me joyful about getting up in the middle of the night to come to their birth – oh, and I also want to at least resemble the person they met with prenatally. ;)

So yes, I wear makeup to work.

I'm not ashamed of enjoying makeup, and I'm not ashamed of being a “girly girl”.

I'm glad I can be my authentic self in every situation, and confidently be the best doula I can be!
