Your Partner and Your Doula...BFFs

Doulas and Partners, Best Friends Forever

Authored by Sara Skiles

One of the most common concerns regarding hiring a doula comes not from our pregnant clients - but their partners or husbands. They are wondering:

- am I not enough support?
- will the doula take over the birth and do everything I should be doing?
- will I be left to sit on the couch watching?
- is it worth the money to hire a doula?

We understand that this may be a new idea to you and you're not sure if it's a good one...but trust me, you are going to LOVE what we bring to the table!

Husbands/partners are very much expected these days to be a hands-on, integral part of the birthing process. There are 12-week childbirth classes for you to take, books for you to read, and a multitude of birthing positions, massaging and breathing techniques, and verbal affirmations to memorize. It's a lot, especially if you've never done this before.

As your doula, our goal is not to replace you and make you an ineffective spectator at the birth of your own child.

Our goal is to empower you to be the best support person you can be, in exactly the way that your own relationship needs.

We will teach you our doula tips and tricks for labor support, but we will also be by your side to whisper which one to pull out at exactly the right time it's needed.

We will take over the hip squeezes and foot rubs when your arms are aching and need a break.

We will make sure you always know what's going on, what's normal, and what to expect.

You will never have to feel guilty for eating, going to the bathroom, napping, or stepping out to call relatives - because you know your loved one will never have to be left alone even for a single contraction.

We will enhance your birth experience in a million different little ways - lifting you up, meeting your needs, and helping YOU look like the labor support rockstar!

Some of you may not be comfortable with hands-on birth support. That's fine too. We respect that and help you participate at your comfort level, and we definitely won't make you clean up any messes. ;) Whatever level of support you and your loved one desire for the birth of your baby, we will help you make it a reality.
