How Can Kinesio-Taping Help My Pregnancy?

Authored by Kati Spletter DC

You may have seen this type of taping used amongst athletes, their legs and arms decorated in colorful, intricate patterns. You may have thought it was some weird sporting trend. Well, I'm here to tell you: it's not! It's actually quite beneficial for anyone and can make your pregnancy a little bit easier, too. What mom doesn't like that?

What is Kinesio-taping?

Kinesio (short for kinesiology) tape is a stretchy, elastic tape specifically designed to provide muscle and joint stability. Kinesiotape helps reduce pain, increases the communication between the nervous system and the muscles through stimulation of the skin, and improves recovery time. You will find kinesio-taping widely used in chiropractic offices. As a new Wichita chiropractor, I utilize adjustments and kinesio-taping together, along with other therapies on my pregnant patients. I find that the support of kinesio-taping helps hold an adjustment or alignment longer.

How Does Kinesio-taping Benefit Pregnancy?

Many seasoned mothers know the aches and pains that come with pregnancy, particularly low back pain; upper back and neck pain; discomfort in the pelvis and hips from relaxed ligaments; as well as abdominal achiness from the stretching of the round ligament, to name a few.

During pregnancy, the mother will release a hormone called Relaxin. This hormone will increase as the pregnancy progresses. Relaxin relaxes or loosens the ligaments in the body, specifically the pelvis area, to prepare the body and make delivery easier. Adjusting the spine and the pelvis will help open the pelvic cavity, making the birthing process easier and faster. The kinesiotape will help hold the adjustment in place longer, interfere with the brain's pain signal and reduce the volume of pain, and support the belly by lifting it, easing back and belly pain.

This type of treatment is especially helpful for mothers in their late second and third trimesters, though it can be used at nearly any point during pregnancy.
